Data center owner and operator Inland Fiber & Data (IF&D) has been selected by the Robotic Assisted Microsurgical & Endoscopic Society (RAMSES) to host the medical trade group’s surgical video repository. The purpose of RAMSES is to further the development of robotic assisted microsurgical tools and platforms for enhanced surgical and patient outcomes. The evolving Internet and robotic surgical technology is advancing abilities to perform medical procedures remotely, with patient and surgeon in separate locations, expanding the use of medical resources while minimizing patient proximity, paving a course for healthcare efficiencies spanning patients and providers globally.

To date, thousands of robotic assisted microsurgical procedures have been successfully completed at institutions around the world. Experts believe the advantages provided by robotics in elimination of tremor, scaling of motion and enhanced magnification have the potential to further expand the field of microsurgery, along with uniformity in the tools utilized by microsurgeons across various fields providing a common robotic assisted microsurgical platform.

Inland Fiber & Data (IF&D) has successfully completed the data center operator’s Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements Number 16 (SSAE 16) review and audit, and has received certification, verifying data center controls under the new standard. Administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, SSAE 16 replaces SAS 70 as the authoritative guidance for reporting on service organizations. The evaluation was conducted by the independent auditing firm Align.

“We’re committed to operating our data centers and facilities at a level that meets or exceeds the highest industry and regulatory standards,” commented Ingram Leedy, Managing Partner of Inland Fiber & Data.

Align performed an independent audit and extensive testing of control activities and effectiveness at IF&D’s facilities, with a full assessment of oversight by executive management, operations and customer service, development and information technology organization, human resources policies, and procedures and risk assessment monitoring.

IF&D’s SSAE 16 designation is significant as a growing number of organizations find that they operate more efficiently and profitably by outsourcing data center functions to service organizations that have the personnel, expertise and technology to accomplish these tasks.

As the June 1st start of hurricane season approaches, data center operator Inland Fiber & Data (IF&D, http://www.inlandfiber.com) announces availability of preparation facilities, providing data center resources for backup server colocation, enabling disaster recovery for organizations seeking uninterrupted IT operations in the event of damage to their primary data center locations.

According to the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University, publisher of annual hurricane activity forecast reports, researchers Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray anticipate well above-average activity for the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, indicating probability of the United States and Caribbean experiencing major hurricane landfall.

Their 2011 report concludes that the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season will have significantly more activity than average. They estimate that this year will have about 9 hurricanes (average is 5.9), 16 named storms (average is 9.6), 80 named storm days (average is 49.1), 35 hurricane days (average is 24.5), 5 major (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.3) and 10 major hurricane days (average is 5.0).

Klotzbach and Gray indicate probability for at least one major hurricane tracking into the Caribbean (10-20°N, 60-88°W) is 61% (average for last century is 42%). Probabilities for at least one major hurricane landfall on each of the following coastal areas:

1) Entire U.S. coastline: 72% (average for last century is 52%)

2) U.S. East Coast Including Peninsula Florida: 48% (average for last century is 31%)

The FLR provides a scalable point-to-point optical transport network solution that meets long-term and network requirements. The FLR offers several advantages: a reliable and flexible network infrastructure that can grow and incorporate technological advancements; enhanced network performance and bandwidth capabilities; and collaboration and advanced communication among research participants

Dynamic bandwidth allocation. Utilizing dedicated and shared 10 Gigabit Ethernet or 1 Gigabit Ethernet high-performance data circuits, FLR participants are provided with additional capacity “on demand”, to accomodate bursts in data-traffic, videoconference, or other special requirements.

Connectivity to commercial Internet Service Providers in order to provide economical and reliable Internet service to FLR participants

Connectivity to advanced production regional and national networks, such as the NLR and Abilene Internet2 backbone, supporting new applications and services

High Speed IP transit paths between participants, supporting both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. The FLR is designed to allow growth in terms of the number of hosts connected as well as the amount of data transmitted

Network peering between the FLR and other data networks. Arrangements with other networks and traffic exchange points allow the FLR to route and exchange network traffic, resulting in fewer hops and faster access to user destinations.

Dedicated wavelenghts between FLR participants or FLR and NLR participants. For research applications needing a dedicated wavelength service, the FLR offers participants, point to point, 1.0, 2.5, or 10 gigabits per second optical lambdas as a complement to the FLR optical-based backbone services.

WINTER HAVEN – Florida LambdaRail has arrived in town, bringing with it higher-speed Internet, greater security and endless research capabilities.

Business and community leaders braved cold weather and gathered Wednesday evening to celebrate the launch of Florida Lambda Rail at the Six Ten Plaza and Inland Fiber and Data campus downtown.

“We’re here to celebrate what we know will be a significant economic development opportunity for Winter Haven – Florida LambdaRail,” said Bud Strang, president of the 6/10 Corporation and Inland Fiber and Data Technology Park.

Florida LambdaRail is now one of 15 service providers housed at Inland Fiber and Data, located at 199 Ave. B, N.W., in the former Verizon telephone company building.

During the short program, representatives from three organizations already on board with LambdaRail – the University of South Florida, Polk State College and Winter Haven Hospital – spoke of the significance of having a local connection in Winter Haven.

“The importance of LambdaRail is the ability to connect,” said Michael Pearce, chief information officer for USF and board member with Florida LambdaRail.

“At the heart of LambdaRail is the driving need to move forward facilitating partnerships with universities, research communities, governmental and health organizations through emerging technologies,” he added.

Marshall Goodman, the chief executive officer of USF Polytechnic, described LambdaRail as “an amazing pathway to commerce.”

Goodman remembered the vision of Marlene Young, the late Winter Haven mayor, who he said first brought the building currently housing Inland Fiber and Data to his attention four years ago. Young had touted the building’s existing fiber-optic lines and the possibilities they offered.

Eileen Holden, president of Polk State College, said she expects the college to transition to the LambdaRail system during spring break, when the college will be closed.

“We’re really looking forward to tapping into the larger community to enhance our curriculum offerings and our ability to exchange information,” Holden said. “We’re very excited there is a LambdaRail connection here in Winter Haven.”

“What LambdaRail is bringing to the students is access to the world,” she added.

Lance Anastasio, president of Winter Haven Hospital, spoke of opportunities for enhanced cooperative medical research and communication throughout the state, particularly in light of the hospital’s advancement in robotics and microsurgery.

“It will allow us to do things we once thought impossible,” Anastasio said.

The evening culminated with Winter Haven Mayor Jeff Potter leading the crowd in a countdown to a laser-light show illuminating the side of the building with a globe containing an outline of Florida and a moving banner of “Florida LambdaRail.”

“This is one of the best presents Winter Haven could receive this year. This is an exciting event,” Potter said.

Online since 2005, Florida LambdaRail is an ultra-high-bandwidth network dedicated solely to research. It is designed to send massive files at much higher speeds than other Internet providers.

A branch of the National LambdaRail system, Florida LambdaRail enables universities and their partners to transcend distance and collaborate on advanced research, education, and economic development activities through a high-performance experimental, research and production, networking and support infrastructure.

Its primary uses are in health care, government, and education and research.
